STEPS

Foro di Cesare
curated by Ludovico Pratesi
Roma, 2007

THE INSTALLATION

The artwork consists of the construction of a large mirrors floor (a reminiscence of the churchyard of the imperial basilicas) positioned in such a way as to reflect the surrounding archaeological ruins.
The cycle of this installation, Steps, started in 2003 at the “Certosa di Padula” to continue to the “Abbazzia della Novalesa”, the “Marino Marini Foundation” in Florence, the “Villa Guastavillani” in Bologna and the “Pescheria Contemporary Art Center” of Pesaro. On this occasion, visitors, who had access to the work on the opening night, contribute to the shattering of the mirrors through their footsteps.

THE INSPIRATION

The image we want to propose is a “kaleidoscopic” rendering of the vision of the Forum of Caesar, of what remains from the progress of history. Some of the existing parts of the architecture is highlighted in a “dreamy” vision. Every single fragment lives in a sort of timeless and self-referential dimension while it is strongly characterized by the History and its steps. These steps make fractures into the orderly vision of present and past that every man would claim to have.
